THE PROBLEM

Many people fall ill of the problem of poor communication with service centers and relief services.

Intro to Problem

During Hurricane Harvey, Brandy's family got flooded more than 5 feet. Her neighbors took them in because their house was raised. There was poor communication between the service centers and people in need during the hurricane. Many service centers can feel overwhelmed with all the calls they get during a natural disaster, which in turn can lead to being placed on call for hours and rescuers coming after help is needed.  Because many of the needs can be met by neighbors more efficiently, we wanted to create a way for neighbors or members in a city/community (i. e. Bellaire, Meyerland) to meet others' needs and share if need help.

Caused by?

The experiences of Brandy's family wasn't a unique one. Many of these situations are caused by lack of access to services and centers, as well as poor communication between both the relief services and the people struck by disaster. This can often lead to problems where people aren't given the proper supplies, or really any supplies that they need. Also, many often refer to their community members for relief and safety from the disaster.

Especially important because...

As temperatures further rise with global warming, more disasters are seen. We need to have a quick and efficient way to meet others' needs because it can often mean the difference between life and death. Here is a plot that shows the correlation between temperature anomaly (how much temperatures have risen from a baseline) and amount of natural disasters. Here is a plot that was made through coding python!
